Biografi MORBID ANGEL
Morbid Angel adalah band Death Metal dari Amerika Serikat, Tampa, Florida. Majalah musik Inggris Terrorizer menobatkan mereka pada posisi nomor satu untuk “top 40 gratest death metal albums” versi majalah ini, dengan debut album 1989 mereka “Altars Of Madness” muncul pada peringkat pertama. Majalah Decibel Magazine juga menobatkan gitaris Trey Azagthoth sebagai “Gitaris Death Metal nomor satu yang pernah ada“. Lagu-lagu band ini sangat kompleks dalam aransemen, sebagai imbas dari skill yang di punyai oleh Azagthoth sebagai gitaris dan Pete Sandoval sebagai drummer, yang juga bermain di band grindcore Death Metal “Terrorizer“. Menurut Nielsen SoundScan, Morbid Angel adalah band Death Metal ketiga yang mendapatkan penghargaan Best selling di Amerika dengan penjualan lebih dari 445.000 keping. Dengan album ketiga mereka “Covenant” menjadi best selling death Metal album sepanjang masa dengan penjualan lebih dari 127.000 keping.
Band ini membuat debut mereka pada tahun 1987 di New Renaissance Records sebagai label mereka. Mereka merekam debut album mereka Abomination Of Desolation pada tahun 1986, namun mereka merasa tidak puas dengan hasil akhir rekaman ini dan tetap tidak di rilis sampai tahun 1991. Album full length pertama mereka, Altars Of Madness di rilis pada tahun 1989.
Morbid Angel adalah salah satu band Death Metal yang menanda tangani kontrak dengan Earache Records, yang juga menjadi pengaruh dalam transisi Death Metal dari akar Thrash Metal ke bentuk seperti sekarang dengan memasukkan vocal yang parau, up tempo blast beat, solo gitar yang tak bernada, gelap, chunky, dan rhythm yang bolak balik. Mereka juga adalah band Death Metal pertama yang bersentuhan langsung dengan sukses mainstream dengan konektifitas menanda tangani kontrak dengan Giant Records pada tahun 1992 dan membuat video klip untuk lagu mereka “God Of Emptyness” yang muncul pada penampilan film Beavis and Butthead.
Lirik lagu mereka rata-rata membahas tentang Setanisme, Okultisme dan anti Kristen, namun sejak Blessed Are The Sick kedepan, lirik mereka berubah kearah Dewa-dewa bangsa Sumeria kuno. Album-album mereka di rencanakan akan menurut alphabetical (album pertama dengan inisial A, album kedua dengan inisial B … dan seterusnya.) Trey Azagthoth berkomentar dalam sebuah interview bahwa kebetulan saja ini terjadi dengan dua album pertama, namun di teruskan saja untuk album-album berikutnya.
